FAQ
About this work
What people ask us most about this specifically.
What is a building pad and why does being on grade matter?
The pad is the compacted earth platform the slab gets poured on. It has to sit at the exact elevation the plan calls for and, above all, be equally firm across the whole surface. If one area is looser than another, the ground settles unevenly under the concrete and the slab ends up cracking. That is why it gets compacted in lifts and the elevation is checked with a laser, not eyeballed.
What happens to the brush and trees you clear?
There are two routes and they change the price quite a bit. One is mulching it in place: it ends up shredded over the ground, costs less and protects the soil from erosion while it is at it. The other is piling it and hauling it off, which is what you need when the lot has to be fully clean or when there are big stumps. The quote tells you which one suits your job and what each costs.
Why am I being asked for erosion control before work starts?
In Texas, the moment you disturb soil on a lot you have to keep mud from reaching the street, the storm drain or the neighbor when it rains. That is erosion control: silt fence along the low edges, a gravel construction entrance so tires knock off before hitting the road, and temporary drainage if the site needs it. The inspector checks it and can shut the job down if it is not there. It goes in on day one, before anything else.
How long does it take to get a lot ready?
A normal residential lot gets cleared and brought to grade in a few days. What stretches it out is always the same: heavy brush, rock underneath, tight access for the machines, and rain, which also means waiting for the ground to dry before you can compact. The actual schedule goes in writing in the quote.
