How much does an excavation job cost?

It depends on the ground, the access and above all the rock. In the Hill Country two lots the same size can cost very differently. That is why we come look at no charge and give you the price in writing.

Do you pull the permits?

Yes. We handle the city paperwork and call 811 to have the buried lines located before any machine touches the ground. It is part of the job, not an extra.

Do you work on houses or only big jobs?

Both. We install a single water service on a house and we prep full commercial lots. Tell us what you need and we will tell you straight if it is a fit.

What if we hit rock?

We own our hydraulic hammers. Hard rock does not stop us and does not leave you waiting on a rental.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. The whole crew is bilingual, in the office and on the job.

How do you leave the site?

We repair the pavement and restore the ground. If we open the street we close it to city standard. We do not leave debris behind.

What is laser grading and why does it matter?

A transmitter spins a laser beam at the exact elevation the plan calls for, and a receiver on the machine tells the operator if it is running high or low. The result is a truly even surface, not eyeballed. On a building pad that means less wasted concrete; on a lot it means water runs where it should instead of into the house.

What about GPS blade control?

It is the next step up. The machine knows where it is on the site by satellite and compares its position against the digital model of the job. The blade corrects itself as the operator moves. It pays off on big sites or complicated slopes where setting a laser in every zone would be impossible. Faster, and far less rework.

How long does it take to excavate a lot?

A normal residential lot gets cleared and graded in 2 to 4 days if there are no surprises. Rock, tight access and rain are what stretch it. The quote gives you the timeline in writing.

Who pulls the city permit?

We do. We have been pulling right-of-way excavation permits with the City of Austin for years and we know the process. You do not have to go to any counter.

How does the street look afterward?

It gets repaired with hot mix to the city standard detail. The restoration has to pass inspection, and we are the ones who pass it, not you.

🪨 Demolition & Rock

See the full service page →

Do you use explosives?

No. Everything is done with the hydraulic hammer. It is slower than blasting, but there is no vibration damaging what is next door and no explosives permitting involved.

Does demolition need a permit?

To take down a structure, almost always yes, and before that the utilities have to be cut: water, power, gas and sewer need to be disconnected and signed off by whoever handles each one. Buried lines also get located and marked before any machine goes in. That paperwork takes time, so it is worth starting it as soon as you decide, not the week of the demo.

Do you take the debris away?

Yes, with our own trucks. Debris gets separated on site because not all of it goes to the same place: concrete and brick can be crushed and reused, metal goes to recycling and the rest to the landfill. That brings the dump cost down, which is why we do it that way. In the quote hauling is listed separately so you can see what it comes to.

What is a building pad and why does being on grade matter?

The pad is the compacted earth platform the slab gets poured on. It has to sit at the exact elevation the plan calls for and, above all, be equally firm across the whole surface. If one area is looser than another, the ground settles unevenly under the concrete and the slab ends up cracking. That is why it gets compacted in lifts and the elevation is checked with a laser, not eyeballed.

What happens to the brush and trees you clear?

There are two routes and they change the price quite a bit. One is mulching it in place: it ends up shredded over the ground, costs less and protects the soil from erosion while it is at it. The other is piling it and hauling it off, which is what you need when the lot has to be fully clean or when there are big stumps. The quote tells you which one suits your job and what each costs.

Why am I being asked for erosion control before work starts?

In Texas, the moment you disturb soil on a lot you have to keep mud from reaching the street, the storm drain or the neighbor when it rains. That is erosion control: silt fence along the low edges, a gravel construction entrance so tires knock off before hitting the road, and temporary drainage if the site needs it. The inspector checks it and can shut the job down if it is not there. It goes in on day one, before anything else.

How long does it take to get a lot ready?

A normal residential lot gets cleared and brought to grade in a few days. What stretches it out is always the same: heavy brush, rock underneath, tight access for the machines, and rain, which also means waiting for the ground to dry before you can compact. The actual schedule goes in writing in the quote.

🧱 Sidewalks & Driveways

See the full service page →

Why does a brand new sidewalk crack?

Almost always because of what is UNDERNEATH, not the concrete. If the base was not properly compacted, the ground gives way at one spot and concrete, which does not bend, breaks. The other reason is thickness: a walking sidewalk and a driveway a truck drives over do not call for the same thickness or the same reinforcement. That is why half the job is base prep and forming, before the mixer ever shows up.

What are those cut lines every few feet?

Those are control joints. Concrete shrinks a little as it cures and it is going to crack no matter what: that cannot be prevented. What can be decided is WHERE. The joint is a deliberately weakened line so the crack shows up there, straight and hidden, instead of running across the middle. A sidewalk with no joints is not better: it is one that will crack wherever it feels like.

What does the ADA standard require on a ramp?

The main thing is the slope: no steeper than 1 in 12, meaning one inch of rise per foot of run. It also needs a flat landing top and bottom, the sides have to be handled so nobody walks off the edge, and it gets the yellow bumpy plate (the detectable warning) where the ramp meets the street. The city inspector checks it, and if the slope is off it has to be demolished and repoured.

When can I walk on it or park on it?

Walking on it, next day. Driving a car onto it, not for about a week: concrete keeps gaining strength for days even though the top already looks hard and dry. Putting weight on it early is the easiest way to break in a new driveway with a crack. When we finish we give you the exact date based on the weather, because cold slows it down.

How is hauling charged?

By the load, and three things set the price: how much material, where it goes from and to, and whether the truck can reach the spot or it has to be moved the rest of the way with another machine. A short run inside Florence does not cost the same as one down to the San Antonio area. Tell us what you need and where, and we price it per load in the quote, with no surprises at the end.

What material do I need for a driveway or an access road?

For anything vehicles will drive on, it is usually two layers: a base course, which is crushed rock with fines that compacts and sets up like a slab, and the gravel you see on top. The classic mistake is dumping loose gravel straight on dirt: with the first rain it sinks and you get potholes. Tell us where it runs and what weight it takes, and we tell you what it needs and how many loads.

Do you move equipment that is not yours?

Yes. We run our own lowboy and gooseneck and move heavy equipment between jobs. What we need to know up front is the weight and dimensions of the machine, because that decides which trailer goes out and what route it takes. Send us make and model and we handle it.
